and Research Photos

I live in the state of Washington which at one time was at the absolute zenith of big time logging railroading. Almost everything designed for logging was made with the Pacific Northwest in mind.  This area of the USA is rich with logging history and heritage. Many of the trails and areas I enjoy where once logging railroad routes. I am an avid mountain biker, so my travels to trails take me to areas that were logged by the pioneer steam loggers.  I usually bring my digital camera to take reference shots of things and places I find out in the woods.

Here you will find some of my more interesting photos from some of my trips and other stuff.

Mt. Blanchard and the Incline Trail

Located near Bellingham Washington, this was the site of the Blanchard sawmill on what is now Chuckanut Drive. There is a network of trails up Blanchard Mountain that follow some of the logging grades. One of the trails follows the incline grade and is quite steep and fast. There is still a lot of logging artifacts to be found near the trails.

Simpson Lumber Co.

Located in Shelton Washington near the Tahuya trail network, we stayed there overnight and got some good photos of the last real logging railroad on the west coast.

MRSR "Steam Up" June 2003

This is the annual event when the MRSR runs photo specials and opens up the shops for inspection. Lots of cool logging stuff.

MRSR Speeders

An interesting part of all railroads are "speeders". Many people restore these for hobby and the MRSR allows them to run on the trackage during special events.

Bulkhead Flatcar

Some reference shots of a 60 foot bulkhead flatcar that I see frequently in Conway Washington.

Scratch Building a Logging Crummy

Here is one of my model railroading projects. A step-by on how I made a small HO scale logging caboose or "crummy".

Making Scale Trees from Salal Bushes

More model railroading stuff. This one shows how I make deciduous trees from native Salal bushes found in the Pacific Northwest.
